Well written, but ultimately disappointing. As others have said, the book degenerates into a long chronology of PLF's travels and socializing with his circle of upper class friends. There is little about how he did his research for the books, or the deeper background of what he wrote about. His time in Haiti and study of voodoo for example are covered in one superficial page. Similarly there is not enough about Balkan history and culture. His exploits in Crete in World War II are on the other hand perhaps given too much coverage. There is also little about his personal finances. Did he really scrounge off so many people over such a long period? Why did people like or at least tolerate him? His books certainly have merit, but he and his circle come across as a bunch of snobs. Perhaps ironically Artemis Cooper is not best placed to write objectively about him, because she and her family were so close to him and came from a similar milieu.

Fermor could write , painting pictures and creating moods, like few travel writers. Cooper writes like the academic that she is. Cooper is careful, thorough and fills in some of the blanks of Fermor's life. She also "deromances" some of Fermor's travel incidents. Because there is nothing more I can read of Fermor's, I went for the Bio.It's worth reading if you like Fermor- lots of new detail and a number of clear black and white pictures. There are several maps that allow the reader to trace some of those little Eastern European towns with unpronounceable names that Paddy traveled through. A good read about a fabulous life.

Every one of Femor's books are wonderful. The people he meets and the conversations they have
are, in some cases, all that is left of a Europe that was destroyed in World War II. The landmarks
were damaged and the people in many cases did not survive the war.

With the European Union, perhaps young people will try exploring as Femor did, once more.
A very fine book, beautifully written and very sympathetic to its subject. If you want a warts-and-all revisionist biography of this playboy, war hero, man-about-town and brilliant literary stylist, you will be disappointed Leigh Fermor was clearly not in the mood to commit indiscretions to his biographer. But what emerges is a clear picture of a strange, restless and fascinating man inhabiting and feverishly documenting a now-vanished Europe.
Excellent book about a very interesting man. I had been reading about Fermor for years. He shows up in literary biographies all the time. But I never really came to grips with him until I read Artemis Cooper's brilliant biography. Fermor was a less academic, linguistically more competent Bruce Chatwin except he added to his accomplishments as a traveller the fact he was a genuine hero in WWII.

Well written and complete, this is a book for people who enjoy the idea of travel between the wars, a gripping war in Crete and a long and interesting career as a writer post war.
What an adventurer Leigh Fermor was, a modern day Byron who fought the Germans as a commando in Crete and a noted scholar of arcane cultures and languages. And what a little s*** who largely lived off rich society ladies before he settled into celebrity status in Greece where he wrote his best books, Mani and Roumeli.

Artemis Cooper captures all the facets.
Having read several of Fermor's travel books, I became very curious about the man. This biography describes an enromously smart, energetic, engaging young polymath who restlessly sought out interesting places and people, and circulated with both artists and diplomats. His charm wears thin, for me, as he enters midlife, sleeping around and drinking heavily while his long-suffering future wife pays him an allowance. But he settles down some in this fifties, marrying and devoting himself to designing and building a stone house on his beloved Mani penninsula. I am determined to read some of what informed him and visit at least a few of the places that he fell in love with.

A very readible and fair-minded account, by an author with personal connections to Paddy, as he was known.
I have been a huge fan of Fermor since I discovered a used copy (with the original cover) of Time of Gifts. I soon read everything I could get my hands on and eagerly waited for the third in the trilogy I was so sad when I heard of his passing, and thrilled to see a bio being written. I was not expecting a travelogue like other readers - if I wanted that I would have just reread his books. I was expecting a well rounded look at this very intelligent and adventurous man. What I got was the background of his life, and his travels and why he never completed the third book. But most of the book was a blow by blow detailed account of his partying, love life, name dropping, moves ad nauseum. The biographer seemed to be writing a haigography, with little nuance of how his experience changed his writing. I ended up loving his books all over again and want to reread them. But ended up really disliking this immature and self centered man the traveler became. Pity.
Well written, but ultimately disappointing. As others have said, the book degenerates into a long chronology of PLF's travels and socializing with his circle of upper class friends.
