Gellman exposes the manner in which Cheney manipulated the levers of power to achieve his goals, and the portrait is unflattering. At the same time, Gellman points out that Cheney did not gain personal wealth through his government service. He was--and apparently still is--a true believer, however dark and misguided his beliefs may be. The portrait of Cheney as a dogmatic, canny manipulator exposes some of the darker sides of the Bush presidency and sheds light on how this country got into the terrible mistake of invading Iraq based on misinformation, and sometimes disinformation. This should be required reading in contemporary history courses. It also demonstrates vividly why Cheney and the other Neocons ought to keep their mouths shut in giving guidance on how to deal with the current Iraq situation. They blew up the country and planted the seeds for the current sectarian wars. They ought to have the common decency to be silent now.

I knew a number of things that are in this book. What is frightening are the number of things that no one could have known. Since Bush gave Cheney carte blanche during his first term he was only lucky that none of this slipped out before the 2004 election. While Bush was lucky the American people were devastatingly unlucky. If Kerry had won, the American people would have had hearings to investigate all of the things Cheney did. Unfortunately we didn't and there are too many things we will never know for sure. In addition this means there is nothing right now to stop another "imperial presidency".
If you want to know the truth about Dick Cheney's Vice Presidency, this book is the place to find out. You might be more forgiving about G.W. Bush after reading this. It seems like the functional president for at least the first Bush term in office was Cheney, not Bush.
The author claims he didn't write this book with any preconceived axe to grind. It is supposed to be impartial but good information reveals Cheney to be a rather sinister manipulator who does it his way without regard for any thing else.
My first reaction after reading half way through the book was that I would have given the book a different title. Here are some suggestions at this point in my reading 1) "Mr. President," because he was the power behind President Bush. 2) "The Counselor," because no matter what you said to him, his facial expressions never betrayed his true reaction. 3) "The Spider," because once you were caught in his web there was no escape. 4) "The Chess Master," because he was always far ahead of the opposition planning his moves. I would not be at all surprised to learn that he was a member of Mensa with an elite IQ.
A wonderful book. This guy knows his subject, Cheney, and he knows how the U.S. government works, too. I always knew that Cheney was a malicious bastard who caused more harm to this country over his many years at various positions and levels of government and then as vice-president. Gellman confirms that view, without prejudice or agenda, on every page. This book reads like a novel, but who would believe it? Cheney played Bush 43 like a cheap drum, understanding W's complete disregard for and curiosity about the details of how government works, and taking advantage of that at every turn. A stunning book, amazing in its attention to detail and its revelation of who did what and how.
Finally, the truth about Dick Cheney. The most shocking info was the fact that he got the PDB (Presidents Daily Briefing) before President George W Bush was given the info. Seems like Cheney was not only Vice President but President too. The insiders knew George W was not very smart so Cheney made many decisions and the staff was told.....don't bother the President with whatever". The 8 years of the W administration was a bad time for this country.....the Iraq war should never have been started and the current situation there now proves it.
Shame on our current Congress for not doing their job .......the Founding Fathers did not want government service to be a lifetime job but that is what it is for many of them now in 2014. God help us all.
This was not the political hatchet job I expected. Mr. Geller's sources were mostly Republican staffers and elected officials. It's interesting to read how Mr. Cheney sets the control process in motion even as the votes in Florida are being counted and re-counted. The Bush Administration is fully staffed and the Bush Cabinet is, with few exceptions, Cheney's selections.
It's sad to see the President willingly go along with this because of his lack of interest in detail and the inability of his personal staff to get traction to challenge Mr. Cheney's decisions, etc. It's not until the acting Attorney General and the head of the FBI threaten to resign and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld leaves the Cabinet that the President begins to assert himself and the VP's grip on power begins to loosen.
One thing missing in this book is Condeleza Rice's role in putting power back into the hands of the President. Perhaps that's another story.
