All the things you look for in a Barbara Metzger novel. This is definitely walking the Primrose path with all the romance, frustrations, mystery and humor you can ask for. Totally entertaining and never a dull moment! The angry hero who gets thwarted at every turn trying to get rid of his aunt's companion from Primrose cottage that was supposed to revert back to his estate when the aunt died. Instead, he is stuck with a young lady he hates to want, as well as all of the aunt's homeless pets she left the cottage to until they can all be placed in good homes. Unbeknownst to the war hero, he has made plans with the war office to hide a very successful French spy who helped save England at the cottage. A cottage he thought would be empty. While he's unsuccessfully trying to place the dogs in a hurry, the spy shows up. An old lover and world renowned dancer which does not go well with the sweet young companion he is now not only trying to protect but also falling for. Shockingly the sweet young companion takes her in along with other down on their luck, homeless kind people. As well as the Duchess who shows up. Mix all of these classes of people, animals and the very frustrated war hero with an overly kind hearted lady and you have a brilliant mix of unending story that you'll finish with a smile on your face. Metzger books never let me down!

Primrose Path Barbara Metzger 9780449225097 Books Reviews

Funny, delightful, light and heartwarming. As all books I've ever read by this author. There is so much bad historical writing out there, such implausibility and inattention to period detail, which is why I really cannot recommend Metzger enough. She is absolutely delightful.
This is one of my "go to" books when I want to read something light and humorous. It has a good story to keep me interested and lots of dogs for the humor. I love it!
Absolute favorite of mine. Watching the hero cope with a world of dogs was hilarious.Have already re-read it twice, laugh each time.
I like Barbara Metzger, but this book has too many unbelievable situations to be a good book.

A lot of this is supposed to be comedic, but a father refusing to ransom his daughters does not amuse me. I also did not believe that the mother was helpless.

The Ladies living in the house with the harlots was preposterous.

This book left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
This is one of my favorite Metzger books. (Another is Miss Lockharte's Letters). I have to admit that I wan't sure I would like it when I first started reading. Initially I didn't have much sympathy for the hero or find the heroine very interesting. But first appearances can be deceiving. Once the scene was set (didn't take long) the action picked up. New twists and characters were constantly being added. I got to know the hero better and I liked the heroine, who was resourceful and had backbone. I enjoyed the humor the story is laced with, as well. A light-hearted, witty, clean romance with a happy ending for all. Like watching a good rom com.
Aunt Sophie has died and left Primrose Cottage to all of her dogs and her faithful young companion to care for them. Her nephew (Viscount Knowle) is upset because he expected to inherit the cottage. Even though he already has more wealth and land than he knows what to do with, he wanted the cottage specifically to house a spy for England and thus enhance his diplomatic career.

Barbara Metzger is one of my go-to authors when I want a good laugh. Her books always provide at least a few laughs, but this one provides quite a few. The love story is wonderful too. It's fun to watch the hero who starts out as a rather self centered, ambitious snob, eventually discover he actually has a conscience and a heart.

There is a lot of funny fun along the way - much of it provided by the dogs who have as much personality as the humans they encounter.

I loved this book.
In true Barbara Metzger fashion, this is another one of her very sweet, very funny romances with the requisite strong but impoverished heroine and the needs-a-clunk-over-the-head hero, and of course, several dogs as secondary characters. I have read several of her books, and I love them all.

This one reads a bit slower, however, and I wasn’t quite as enamored of it as I am her other books. It’s good, it’s very witty, I love the dogs (all 20 or 30 of them), and the budding romance made me sigh. But I had a tough time staying interested. It’s still worth the read – just not her best work.

For the record, Lord Heartless and Miss Lockharte’s Letters are outstanding. Never read anything more clever or witty! If you go by writing style, it almost seems like these 2 were written later, as the author’s writing style feels more polished and mature. I highly recommend those two if you are interested in this author, and want a good laugh along with a very sweet love story. (Oh, and if you like animals.) I will definitely continue to read her work. I think she's a real find.
