Ethshar and the Northern Empire have been at war for hundreds of years. No one remembers why anymore or over what. No one dreams it could ever end until a wizard creates a sword that makes its user unbeatable.

The Misenchanted Sword Legend of Ethshar eBook Lawrence WattEvans

This is a great start to Lawrence Watt-Evans' Ethshar series. A soldier, trapped behind enemy lines and striving to evade enemy soldiers, keeps going further and further from his own army when he stumbles into history. The one experience that shapes the rest of his life is caused by his accidental encounter with an eccentric wizard who casts a spell to help him get back to his own lines. I don't want to give too much away but Kelder's adventures range from an encounter with a dragon to a battle with a half-demon. I think this is a well-crafted and thoroughly designed book and I recommend it highly.

The Misenchanted Sword Legend of Ethshar eBook Lawrence WattEvans Reviews

I've liked some to LW-E's other works more, but his style is there and the light-heartedness that often found in his works is present and to be enjoyed. The Enchanted Sword and it's "Curse" present the owner with some interesting problems as he searches for a way to over come them.
I liked Watt-Evans' "The Lords of Dus" reasonably well as a child, so decided to try this book. Turns out, I had also read this as child. Though the writing is simplistic, the premise of the story is interesting and one of the few books that I continued thinking about long after I had read it. I enjoyed it more when I was younger.
Read it a few times now since the 80s. A nice simple story with some great twists. Some great technical mechanics of magic in there!
I just re-read this after many years. I expected to like it but I loved it. There is a fairy-tale quality in that the protagonist is not some sort of superman, just a fellow who has a stroke of luck. The story is a lot of fun.
This book started so well. A lost scout for the good side gets caught behind enemy lines. He accidentally becomes the wielder of an amazing sword, but doesn't know what it does. He is able to get back to his own forces. His own magicians study and discover some of the features of the sword. The generals decide this will be their secret weapon. The scout becomes their designated assasin. Wonderful! Then something goes wrong. Characters are talked about without any contribution to the storyline. The focus becomes the dull time spent between assasinations. Then the war ends by an act of god with no involvement by the main character! But that's not where the book ends. After a wonderful start that leaves open so many avenues for weaving an intricate tale, the author seems to have given up. Just like a wood chip thrown into a river, the hero is a victim of circumstances even though he has possibly the most powerful weapon on the planet
I've read about five books in this series and I'm very pleased to see that I can try the others on kindle. This has been my favorite book so far in the series and it was an enjoyable read. It is a light and evenly paced story of a fantasy world that mixes the magical and the mundane. It presents a practical world where magic exists and is accepted as extraordinary but not fantastic or impossible. I recommend The Misenchanted Sword as the book to try. If you like it move onto the next in the series.
This is the first of the Ethshar books, which I first read when it first came out. I still love it.

The basic story... a grumpy wizard enchants the sword of a lost scout during a war. One superb enchanted sword. You can defeat and kill ANYONE with it. Plus you can't be killed. Perfect!

Well, except for a few minor details.

First, it is the perfect killing machine, but only one person at a time. It has to be resheathed between each fight, so if yo are facing two or more people at once you are on your own after the first kill.

Second, after it has been used a hundred times, it kills you.

Plus once drawn, you must kill someone before resheathing it.

Assuming you get past all that, you will live forever... but will continue to grow old. Plus the sword keeps you alive. It does not keep you from being maimed and in pain. So how does an ordinary person deal with this? That is the heart of the story.
This is a great start to Lawrence Watt-Evans' Ethshar series. A soldier, trapped behind enemy lines and striving to evade enemy soldiers, keeps going further and further from his own army when he stumbles into history.
