Children of the Plantation A "Diana Rivers" Mystery The Diana Rivers Mysteries Book 2 edition by Faith Mortimer Literature Fiction eBooks

I recently discovered Faith Mortimer on Facebook and I'm so glad I did. Children of the Plantation carried me to an exotic world. Diana Rivers is the perfect amateur detective. Slightly reluctant, a tad bit out of her element, and vulnerable by her pregnancy, she steps up to help the mysterious Miss Chalcot. The setting in Malaysia becomes a major player in the story. I've never been there and yet I find myself yearning to return to the lush tropical plantation hotel. BTW... the ending is a complete surprise. I love when that happens. Another reviewer mentioned Miss Marple. Diana Rivers brings that Miss Marple-touch plus her youth to this mesmerizing tale. I look forward to the next book in the series. Highly recommended.

And now to The Assassins' Village.

Children of the Plantation A "Diana Rivers" Mystery The Diana Rivers Mysteries Book 2 edition by Faith Mortimer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Must read.
Excellent author! I have read three of Faith Mortimer's books. They are very well written. You are kept in suspense almost to the end and then you realize the person who did it wasn't even in your thinking. I have found another great author and will continue with reading her books.
Others have given good synopses of the plot. Suffice it to say that the mystery stems from events which happened in what is now Malaysia in the 1950's and 1960's. The author gives us a good feel for the ex-pat lifestyle during that time and an introduction into the political events that were taking place in the area. That in itself makes the book worth reading.

The detective is Diana Rivers, a mystery writer, who, with her husband, takes a holiday in Malaysia at hotel which is a former rubber plantation. The mystery unfolds as Diana reads the diaries and other papers having to do with the former owners and inhabitants of the plantation, and that's my only real criticism -- the narrator is constantly changing, and I had to keep checking to see who was the speaker this chapter.

Nit picking aside, the writing is good and the plot moves right along. Some people may think that the book is a little short, but I think that's preferable to something that drags on and on. The plot has lots of twists and turns, some of which strain credibility, but the book is definitely a good read. I will be reading more of Ms. Mortimer's books.
I enjoyed reading this story of a changing time where some couldn't let go of the ways of the past. There were a few things I didn't care for, that is why 4 stars instead of 5. I had it figured out about 75 percent through, but had to read about how it unfolded. Thank you
an interesting mystery set in malaysia.

the crime - a murder - happened many years ago (the 60s). you don't actually get to the crime until you are well into the book, but the journey to the crime is so interesting as you are learning about colonial life among the 'natives' and the political climate that led to malaysia's freedom.

the story is told by pregnant diana rivers, aided by her husband Steve, as she reads some journals. But diana does meet and interview some of the principals still living.

it's a compelling story and it's told well. i absolutely loved the exotic, protected hothouse setting amidst the political past as much as i enjoyed the luxurious and languid present in a posh resort.

to the author's credit and skill all the information we need to solve the crime - about alex, and ms. chalcot - is revealed to us through those journals. we just needed to see it from a different perspective - as Diana did.
I got this book one day while it was free, and it sat on my kindle for a while, since I barely have time to read. I cracked it open while waiting at the auto dealer and began reading. I completely enjoyed the story, there were only a few slow moments for me, but I managed to get through.

I loved the descriptiveness of the scenery, the history of the country. The family was definitely dysfunctional, as many are even today. The secrets kept, the alternate lives lived was crazy. I must admit I chuckled reading Eleanor's account of her first time with her husband and how she quickly decided she abhorred sex. The siblings were equally as entertaining, as was their stories during the adventure. Paul Tan was a strangely intriguing character as well.

I would certainly recommend this book, the ending actually did take me by surprise. I always knew something was amiss from the child's birth, but I didn't suspect that revelation for some reason. Great job and kudos to Faith Mortimer.
Faith Mortimer picked an interesting and effective method to weave her story and unravel a compelling mystery. Miss Chalcot, the intriguing hostess and owner of an old Malaysian rubber plantation turned hotel, hires a guest, Diana Rivers, on vacation and likened to a "modern day Agatha Christie", to write a novel that would tell the Chalcot family's story. The vehicle Miss Chalcot offers for Diana's research is a group of diaries written by the since deceased mistress of the plantation, Miss Chalcot's mother. Through the always curious eyes of Diana, the wonderful old ex-family plantation is explored and the diaries read. Slowly, via the vehicle of Diana's observations of both the place and the written word, the mystery and true story of the Chalcot family is revealed.
The foreshadowing is apparent, yet so subtly constructed that it hooks you to want to read on. Sure enough, Diana finds that there is a novel in Miss Chalcot's papers. But, how much should Diana reveal?
