This book is more than just a cookbook, it's a great starter guide for anyone interested in making bento boxes. The author has really great tips for the boxes, what goes in the boxes, the accessories for boxes, as well as how to pack everything into your box. I found the hygienic tips very useful, as well as the packing tips for different size boxes.

The recipes themselves are also good looking, and would actually make some of them as fullblown dinners and not just bentos. Not going to lie, the Ginger Pork recipe made my mouth water just looking at it. The only disappointing thing is that recipes are in color on the front, main page, but then on the prep page the smaller instructional pictures are in black and white. The book is divided into Japanese-style recipes (helpful glossary in the back of all ingredients) and then ideas for more "American" style bento boxes. These recipes all seem pretty healthy and delicious as well. Pretty much any element is swappable for another, the fun thing about bento boxes is the ability to mix and match. All elements of the box have their preparation explained separately, and there's a timeline for all of the elements as well so you can decide what to make based on how much time you have.

I think I'm going to really enjoy this book for both the recipes and the ideas it will provide for other bento ideas.

The Just Bento Cookbook Everyday Lunches To Go Makiko Itoh Makiko Doi 9784770031242 Books Reviews

I just started doing bento about 8-10 months ago. I had been googling recipes in my free time, and the Just Bento website kept coming up over and over with easy to make, easy to supply recipes. Soon after digging around in her website one afternoon, I saw she made a cook book and immediately knew I needed it for a guide!

So far it has ben extremely helpful giving me side ideas to add to my box and giving me inspiration to edit her recipes to my tastes. It also has been a great guide for 'intro to bento' for someone who wants to go for something that's healthy, balanced, pretty (but doesn't have to be instagram crazy), and tasty. It even has some more american taste friendly recipies for you to use. The photos are gorgeous as well! It's a great book for someone looking for a great idea/cook book for a bento beginner!
I didn't follow the recipe to a T but it came out basically the same. I loved this meal and am looking forward to the other meals in the book. It's very easy to read and understand, and I don't have to go out of my way to buy the ingredients needed. Would definitely recommend this book!
Timelines are included to assist in packing the bento before leaving. The ingredients are easy to find, easy to prepare, and substitutions are provided. I find this cookbook easier to utilize than other bento cookbooks - the ingredients, in particular, are much easier to obtain at a standard grocery store. I appreciate the nod to not-so-traditional suggestions, since we are using the bento-style meal prep as a tool to improve our nutrution, not necessarily as a method of exploring another culture. This serves as a nice basis for planning and is a good source of inspiration.
This is best of the best IMO of Bento books. Colorful pictures, easy to follow ingredients without the fu-fu pictures and cutsy-ness that you can find doing a Google search. And the author is just so nice on her Facebook page and will answer any questions you have. My poor book is so dog-eared from useage that I had to buy a 2nd copy. Enclosed is my personal 1st bento. Steak with sugar peapods and fresh fruit. Next time I am going to make sure I put more protein like egg omelet.
This is a wonderful book for beginners! It includes wonderful tips on how to safely and quickly pack a proper bento, how to cook rice, different types of Onigiri, and rules for this such as salads and weight loss. With 25 delicious recipes (using multiple types of protein, including chicken, pork, shrimp, salmon, and tofu), this book offers great options for a changing and delicious meal every day of the week. Child-friendly recipes that are filling for adults as well fill this book, and the recipes are easy to follow and prepare the night before or the morning of. With the safety tips, you don't have to worry about how to care for the food you've made, you just have to eat it! I've tried most of the recipes in here over the 3 years I've owned this book, and I have to say that every one I've tried is just as delicious as the first. The recipes are also forgiving. If you don't have one thing, you can always swap it for something else, and I've often swapped the ingredients to make the meal vegetarian or vegan when the mood strikes. With variations offered by the recipes, and creativity of your own, you have a never-ending source of knowledge for delicious bentos!
